Careers in the music industry
- Artist & repertoire executives – The efforts of the A&R executives have made it possible for people who would otherwise remain out of the limelight to be discovered. Record labels often employ A&R executives to look for new musical talent with the goal of generating marketable brands. These executives discover rising stars by listening to demos, going to shows and taking advice from individuals in the industry. They approach the artists in order to offer them record deals.
- Session musicians – Some musicians can handle vocal duties and play different types of instruments. However, for many of the artists it is impossible. Therefore, session musicians come handy. Session musicians offer instrumentation to producers and artists when it is required. For instance, of an artist’s wants to feature a violin in their album but they do not possess the skill to play the instrument they can consider hiring a session musician.

- Freelance musicians – This large category is available in every genre including classical, popular, studio and church music. Freelance musicians work part-time performing, audio recording, teaching and repairing & manufacturing instruments. They do not generate benefits directly from freelancing.
- Full time performers – Some churches hire on a full time basis soloists and music directors. Other full time performance includes ballet companies, opera and symphony orchestras. They are often unionized with multiyear contracts and collective bargaining.

Nevertheless, the income of the musician depends on their entrepreneurial ability, the desire to drive in order to succeed and some degree of luck and timing.
